Retrato de Eva No.1

Throughout the history of art, portraiture has almost always had a precise purpose.

To display power.
Opulence.
Beauty.
Wisdom.
Lineage.
Or, in other cases, to reveal something deeper than appearance.

But in Retrato de Eva No.1, Eva seems to want to show us something else.

One thing we do know: this Eva is not the Eve of the Bible. She is a contemporary figure, placed inside another story, another time, another unease.

We do not know exactly what she wants to show us.

Perhaps a decision.
Perhaps a warning.
Perhaps the instant when something begins to change before we are able to understand its consequences.

There is something unsettling about a portrait when it stops asking us to look at a person and instead begins to make us feel that the person knows something we do not yet know.

Eva belongs to that instant.

A moment before transformation.
Before loss.
Before even the certainty that something has already begun.

And perhaps the question is not who Eva is.

The question may be:
