En el Lodo Cenagoso No.5

I have always been haunted by an image from the Psalms: the man who is lifted out of the mire.

But while working on this series, I became interested in another moment.

What happens before he is lifted out?

I did not need to imagine it. I knew that feeling: remaining inside a condition you desperately want to escape, without yet knowing whether there is a way out—or how much longer you will have to remain there.

That is why En el Lodo Cenagoso could not be resolved in a single painting.

I conceived it as a sequence, almost like a theme with variations. Each work belongs to the same spiritual and psychological state. The instant changes, but the man remains inside.

No.5 belongs to that persistence.

Over the years, I have come to understand that many of the questions that appear in La Parábola began long before I knew I was constructing a story. They were first present in my own life: loneliness, helplessness, the fear that what we experience may ultimately have no meaning.

The paintings came afterward.

Perhaps that is why I keep returning to this man.

Because as long as he remains in the mire, his question remains mine as well:

Is there really somewhere to get out to?
