The "In the Muddy Quagmire" series extends from a piece I painted during my time in Cuba to my life as an immigrant in the United States. It arises from a particularly dark period, reflecting the weight of the internal and external struggles I experienced, conveying the sensation of being trapped in a restrictive and oppressive environment.
Inspired by Goya's black paintings, I used dark colors and shadows to capture a haunting atmosphere, symbolizing desolation and the challenge of facing adversity. Each piece in this series is characterized by a mixed media technique on canvas, allowing for the creation of textures and details that invite the observer to reflect on life's challenges.
"In the Muddy Quagmire No.12" was the last painting I created for the series. It marked my temporary farewell, and from it, I introduced some changes to the story I was telling.
The composition features a man wearing a mask, enveloped in a dark environment symbolizing the weight of internal and external struggles. The shadows and dark tones reflect the complexity of human emotions in a bleak setting.
