I painted this work during a deeply turbulent period in my life. I wanted to represent the anguish of an existence without hope; that is what life in Cuba felt like. There, man knew little beyond his restraints, his questions, and his desolation. I could have painted something else—a flower, mountains, the sea—but everything would still have looked like this painting: simply… desolate.
It was the third painting I created for this body of work and, over time, it became one of the foundational works of La Parábola. Here, man has not yet found an answer. The machine, the perfume, and the forgetting do not yet exist. He remains alone before what confines him, trying to understand why existence seems to have been reduced to pain.
In the Pit of Desolation No.1 belongs to Imposibilitados, the first threshold of La Parábola. In some way, everything that comes later begins with that question still unanswered.
